Sr. Mechanical Engineer
About:
Pipedream Labs is on a mission to scale hyperlogistics this decade. We run autonomous robots through pipes buried underground to help remove emissions, congestion, and cost out of the current logistics system. We’re literally building from the ground up, and need fiercely independent thinkers and doers to help make the dream a reality.
Our goal is to make delivery so fast and effortless that almost anything you need can be delivered in single digit minutes or less. To do this, we need to bring in the best talent in the world and provide them the tools & support they’ll need to do the best work of their careers. While we have extremely high hiring standards, a candidate’s past projects, drive, and humility supersedes their degree(s), and their experience. Some of our first hires were previous founders who sold their respective companies, and some of our hires were still in college.
What this position is:
In this role you’ll be working directly on the robot, portals, and underground infrastructure. We're looking for talented hardware designers who are comfortable taking ownership of a project and having large responsibilities. Most of our products are made from sheet metal and include a couple axis of motion. In this role you will likely own a large subsystem and be responsible for designing, prototyping, and validating the hardware. You will work closely with electrical and software engineers and integrate the necessary sensors and actuators to operate your mechanism reliably. We ship hardware quickly and take an iterative approach to hardware development.
Requirements:
5+ years of experience
Shipped multiple hardware products
Experienced with designing sheet metal assemblies
Deep experience with any CAD platform (Onshape preferred but not required)
Deep understanding of multiple manufacturing methods and how to design for them
A solid understanding of core concepts, including: mechanics, kinematics, thermodynamics, materials science, etc.
Experience with linear and rotary motion systems
Clear communicator with no ego
Solid understanding of common actuators and sensors used in robotics
Nice to haves:
A portfolio of past work
Experience in robotics or automated material handling
Any electrical or software experience
Responsibilities:
Performing a full lifecycle product development (design, develop, test prototypes, manufacture & implement)
Designing parts, sub-systems, or entire products (depending on scope/size of product)
Utilizing multiple engineering disciplines throughout the design process
Collaborating ideas for ways to improve the product, and executing them
Testing & evaluating theoretical designs
Working with contract manufacturers to produce components
Working with vendors to source components
